I have more news from University of Hyderabad and also more transliteration from Bindu Bhatt of Columbia University. Both have been sent to Dr. Jayabarathi and Swaminathan, and are listed below. Any comments or observations are most welcome.
Regards,
Jennifer
>From Hyderabad:
Dear Jennifer
Even our graphic-machine started working a week back
our mail server was out of order for 7-8 days.
Here is the positive news!! But I am not sure whether it
gives you much pleasure or not.
Here are the things I and my friend Srinivas have fond -
1. Language of the mans. is definately Kannada, not Manipravaala.
2. Title of the book is Navaratna chintaamani
`navaratna-chintaamaNi' -in correct notation.
3. Subject - `jyotiShya' (Astrology)
After reading a couple of folios we have concluded -
In India people used many ways to know the future, to have
an idea about the result of the work they going to take on.
I remember, eventhough I have never used to go for it, people
with a bundle of paper-leaves and with a parrot sit beside the
roads. When somebody comes to them with a question, they
open the door of parrot's cage. It comes out and selects one of the
leaves. On the basis of the matter written on the leafe they
give answer to the question.
Somehow on the same track this book also starts. After bowing
to the deities, writer tells that he is going to write how to
anticipate the result of any endevour. (I am sending a copy of
translitaration and of the two and a half pages with this mail.)
Writer at the begining asks reader to follow some proceger.
But unfortunately we are missing some crucial words for which
we are not getting the clear picture of the matter.
(I hope somebody else or we ourselves find out it someday.)
According to the proceger one with the use of `kavade' (some
kind of shells) gets a number. On its basis one should read
the perticular page's perticular line.
All this information is given within the first folio.
>>From second folio onwards in each and every folio, in each and
every line `ONLY' different kinds of results are written!!!!!
Beleave me, I checked in between and the end folio we hardly
find something else than lists of results!!
Like -
`This work would not be done by single person'
`There is doubt whether this is possible or not'
`The very person has done the murder'
`May the pregnent woman dye' etc.
Jennifer, I thank you for giving an apportunity to involve in
this work. I had actually read many manuscripts, however not
much old, in past. But this is something challenging. This
also forced us to expose ourselves to new computer devices.
