Dear Ms.Jennifer,

Since the information might interest some of our
netters, I thought it better to answer your queries through the
list.

>What is Aaruud?

Aaruud is otherwise known as Aarudam in Tamil.
It is the prediction of events through certain signs or
reference to certain texts or cards. Aaruud is also applied
to find out whether to venture into something or not.
The Hindus have many systems of Aaruda Saastra.
They go by various names like Agasthiyar Aaruudam, Vaaraahi
Aaruudam, AnjanEyar Aaruudam, GanEsar Aaruudam, Atta
Dhikku Aaruudam, Pushpa Aaruudam etc.
These are texts written in folios. You open a folio at random
and open it. Certain other Aaruuds have certain indices. According
what star or asterism governing the time did you open the folio.
Still others employ a "Chakra". This contains 64 or 108 squares with
numbers in them. You close your eyes and touch a square and read
the "phala" or results according to the number in it.
We also have a type where parrots are employed.
The parrot picks out a card from one pack and flips it over.
In it are cryptic messages.
There are other systems where you use dice. Three throws
of a particular type of dice that is in a pair and contains only
blank, 1, 2, and 3.
There is another variety where ceratin types sea shells
are used as dice.
The above types are known as "Paaiychgai Aaruudam"
There is still another system where the cackle of the
lizard is deciphered. This is known as "KauLi Saastra".
Then there is the "Saguna Saastra" where the flight of birds,
sounds of animals, crossings of birds and animals, falling of lizards,
etc., are used to predict events.
In all these systems, the message or "phala" is written in
a cryptic manner. You have to interprete it according to the circustance.

You would have noticed that some of these are familiar?
Yes. They should be.

The Tarot cards that the westerners use are such devises.
The Chinese "I Ching" also falls under the same system.
In this, two trigrams combine to make one hexagram. You take a
combination of hexagrams and read off the cyptic messages. Then you
apply it to your present query according to your situation. And then
you relate it to your present position and circumstances.
The Ancient Greeks used the "Oracle of Delphi", where
the Vestal Virgins used to consult a cauldron of smoke and fire.
The pattern of fire and smoke told them a lot.
The Romans used to slaughter a sheep, split open its
innards and observe the position of inner organs and decipher.
The Western Aaruuda Saastra later on passed on into
witch-craft where you still find it intact-alive and kicking.
The Amerindians also had certain systems.
About the Hopi Indians, our friend Vassan can tell us.
>
>Do you have an English translation of your Naadi article?

:-)Sheepish, shy grin.

No. I have'nt translated it yet. Will do. Soon.
Barry Pittard is now after Angiah to do the job.

>Can you recommend a reference book that has an English version and that
>is accurate? (most of what I saw in the bookstores today was a sort of
>Hollywood westernized version of Vedic astrology) I will try the
>university bookstore later this week.

About the Aaruda and Naadi, there is none to this date.
Prasna has good English versions by Bangalore Raman,
K.N.Saraswathi and others. But this system is a rather difficult
one because its coordinates have to be translated differently.
But with apt guidance, it can be mastered. The "Astrological Magazine
of India" runs a regular section on it.
>
>Are there Jyotish institutions or experts that should be contacted?

In the internet, you can approach the mailing lists
alt.jyotish and alt. astrology asian. The famous JaiMaharaj,
the nemesis of Indology list:-) will also be there.

The Astrological Magazine is a good source and can be
a forum to meet many minds.

> Is this a particular field of expertise for you?

I would'nt dare to say that I have expertise.
But there is a very strange incident behind how I
came to learn the Prasna Tantra. It would look as if some
parts fall into place to make a pattern that takes place according
to a super blue-print from ? by ? :-)

>Any other comments, observations or references would be most helpful.
>
>As always, thank you.

Guess what? I have one more question ;-)

Are there alternate spellings for prasna, naadi and aaruud that might
help me find resources?

Not that I know of. But Prasna is sometimes known
as Horary Astrology. But this can also mislead you you to
another system which is based on Hora Saastra whch is
totally diferent. Prasna is also called by a lesser known name-
Mundane Astrology.

Regards

Jayabarathi
