Dear Netters,

This posting is forwarded from the forumhub.
The writer exhibits a great acumen for deep insight
and has made prudent points.
He has given food for thought.
If some of the veteran netters would recall, we
discussed this subject in a different perspective, when
we were discussing about the "Land of Kumari" and
the "Kadal Paalam".

Regards

Jayabarathi

What is kaar kaalam? Which part of the year?

I came to this question after reading kuRunthokai
r pA # 21 (by othalAnthaiyAr). This book by UVS in its
introduction (nUlArAychchi) says the season is
aavaNi -- purattAsi. (ie Aug 15 -Oct15)
>From the above pA # 21 (what a beautiful way of expressing
the trust of thalaivi on thalaivan's word, but I will be digressing)
konRai malar (Golden Shower, Indian Laburnum, botonical name
Cassia Fistula according to Tamilnadu Forest dept guide book)
blooms and signifies the arrival of kaar kaalam (UVS gives a
cross-ref to aga400: kadavul vazththu, but I dont have the book to
check).

But in madras konRai tree is in full bloom from
r about 20/25 April to Mid June. These chandelier type
of yellow flowers are a great treat to eyes.
Again digressing. But this period is not the season of rains
any where in Tamilnadu.

What does that mean?
Is there any information for metereologists/atmospheric
scientists here? (hope i spelt that right)

Have the seasons changed over 2000 years?

Or has the biorhythm of the tree changed to bloom
in a different season nowadays?
(I am agreat fan of konRai trees, so my dates on current
blooming pattern are accurate, and easily verifiable)

Or is it a problem of compatibility of calendars?
(how are we sure what we call aavaNi now, is the same
that was 2000 years ago, basing on sun's position with
reference to stars) Did we make any adjustment when
the west switched from Julian to Gregorian calendars?

Which of the three reasons? Or is there any other
alternative hypothesis?

konRai being the flower of choice for Sivan
I am sure the same info about it signyfing the onset
of monsoon must be found in later bhakthi literature.

Here is that pA 21 of kuRunthokai, by othalaanthaiyaar:
( I am placing a slash to indicate end of line, other line
breaks you see are not correct)

vaNdupadath thathaintha kodiyiNa ridaiyidupu/
ponsey punaiyizai kattiya magaLir/
kathuppiR ROnRum puthuppUng konRaik/
kaanam kaarenak kURinum/
