Dear Indy Ram,

>perhaps all the Tamil teachers in the US should form a group and share
>information among one another and thereby improve the process of
>learning and teaching as well

Chandra (Chandrasekaran, Periannan) proposed that we start a
mailing list to discuss the issues of Tamil Heritage schools. I have
started one such group (kalvi@egroups.com). I have also invited
teachers of the Tamil Nadu Foundation school in Fremont, Ca.

One of the things that the TNF school is trying to do is to get
accreditation for its classes. To do that we need to register our
school with the state education board and/or be affliated with
a local school/university.

We would like to know if other Tamil schools have done this
elsewhere in North America. If so, it would be helpful to learn
from their experience.

Specifically,

1. What are the requirements for accreditation?

2. Do state boards accept books published overseas? Or do they
insist that the teaching material have local content? Currently
we rely most on the Singapore text books with some supplementary
material from Tamil Nadu. Both are meant for students who
are learning Tamil as the primary language - not particularly
suitable for second language learners.

3. Do American universities that have Tamil program let heritage
schools affliate with them as learning centers and give credits
to students?

4. Does the Pennsylvania program assist heritage learners - mostly
children?
