To all,
I do not subscribe to webmasters and ramaNi (kandaiah ramaNitharan)
does not write here. So, I will not comment on any of his words. I
however know the truth of "some" of his words and why he has to say it
in many words (and when you go in many words, you have to rub on the
wrong side). But, I would like to say,
1. In the era of prose and prosodic verses we still need yappu as an
art form
No one has the right to say which art has to practised and which have
to be given up (just because it does not appeal to the contemprorary
masses). If anyone sees an absymal trend of using yappu as a vehicle
to 'thuthipaadal' - it is not the yappu to blame. To overcome this I
would like to see yappu being used for other themes.
2. Couplet as a mnemonic - why not. If someone enjoyed it for its
beauty and rhythemic sense (which just sticks to his mind), the
scientific concept comes as a bonus to his memory. I do not understand
the logic of all people who imagine that all science text books are
going to be converted as tamil poetry and seeing more business for
konar uRaikaL. This is a mute logic. The imaginations can only be
assumed frail if the 7th standard science question is going to read as
"aRRal maaRaak kOtpaattai, aaciriya virththathil vadikkavum"!
Definitely our modern teaching trends are not going to lead us to rote
by memory - the attempt here is to tell science in as many ways as
possible - and if one sticks it does good for our scientific
temperament.
3. Versification of science for the sake of pedagogy may be debatable,
but science as a potent theme for verse (to express the beauty of the
concepts and phenomena) is undeniable to anyone who dabbles with both.
4. If we have failed in the attempt to express the beauty of science
within the exactitudes of marabhu, it is neither because the inadequacy
of the language, nor the unnecessary bounds of thaLais. I would rather
suspect myself and obey the first principles - would submit that my
limited intellect is incapable of doing this extreme excercise.
5. To call or not to call them poems - great thinking. To those who
proudly say this will fail to be classified as poetry, if they apply
the same meter to their own favourite puthukkavithaikaL... I see an
absymal trend in the modern tamil poetry that it is poetry only if you
write about the upressed, about the "avalangkaL of vaazkkai", about the
poverty. In the process we have pathetically failed to make use of
poetry as a vehicle to portray aesthetics, to tell stories and to just
express whatever little thing we see poetically.
6. And I do not think anyone will refute, in this generation of
scientific plagiarism, commodification of science (like gene
modification of crops), etc any poet (by his heart) has an impending
duty to use his potential weapon as a powerful medium against them.
And to say that powerfully, you need to say 'science in verses
(prosodic or otherwise)' - and this theme cannot become monopoly of
prosodic poetry (though I do not see any of the much self-proclaimed
vanguards of this trend doing it). We have a long tradition of using
yappu in puRam concepts like this (vaLLuvar for one) and this is what I
would like all these eventully lead to.
I am open to all opinions in this, in whichever the forum is. I enjoy
all forms of poetry and literature. If you find any other place
inconvenient, I welcome to the new thread called aRiviyaRpaa I have
opened in forumhub. Come let us discuss without hurting sentiments.
