anpin iraama. ki,
thanks for your posting. Again, the core of my posting is missed,
simply.
I said none of these pA are are going to be used in text books (on
science) and I would not like to see them either. The should not find
a place in science text book. But, they should be available elsewhere,
say in folk traditions, in small quizzes, or even in TAMIL text books.
(like they have paLLu, cindhu, ammAnai, let them have aRiviyaRpA, one
in a text book) That helps building in scientific temperament. As such
I do not envisage the necessity arising for konar urais for science.
(though my friends had ariviyal konar, jut because it comes from the
same publisher and had a similar cover and logo :-)))
I agree no science text book in english has verses, and I also
reiterate that books in tamil should not have.
I fully agree that in addition to satisfy the ego of the science-poet
it should also be useful. But, again, I do not expect them to be seen
in science texts. They should be available around, just for the
curious onlooker to grab.
My statement was let us tell sciene in as many media and ways as
possible, if one stirs the curiosity of the student, it goes a long
way. After all consumer is the king, let us feed him as many different
delicacies as possible. Let him choose. Some may find audio-visual
interesting. Some may find quizzes enthusing, while for some other
section these kind of couplets will stick and he will go back. I never
said pA is the only was but pA is also a possible way.
We are long stuck with the notion that text books are the only was to
learn (and teach) we failed to provide knowledge in as many vehicles as
possible. My wish is that we should try that - as much as we can.
And, it is not for building MY temperament, in fact, from 12 hours a
day and 6 days a week of my lasers and UHV, I need a break. I want to
use tamil for that.
