COMMUNITY AFFAIRS - Bone marrow drive

Donors urgently needed to aid New Orleans boy
=============================================

By ABRAHAM THARIATH

NEW YORK -- Mithun Kamath, 12, was this year's area champion from New
Orleans,
Louisiana, in the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee Championship.

Kamath, an eighth grader in the gifted and talented program at the John
Q. Adams Middle
School, aims at the national title, and has been preparing earnestly.
But that could be
interrupted. His parents, Burde and Urmila Kamath of New Orleans,
learned recently that their
son has leukemia and he urgently needs a bone marrow transplant.

But the odds of finding a matching marrow in the current donor registry
are
dim as Mithun's marrow type is limited to South Asians, and the number
of
South Asian donors registered are limited.

Hence Mithun's parents have issued an appeal to people of South Asian
origin to register with
a donor program or contact them at (504) 466- 9474 (e-mail:
bkamath@...). Such
registration would help not only Mithun, but other South Asian patients
who need a matching
donor, according to Subhash Kulkarni, a family friend of the Kamaths who
helped organize a
marrow-donor drive.

According to the Kamaths, the nearest donor center can be found out by
calling
800-MARROW2, and the general information is available at the Website
http://www.marrow.org.

Besides SAMAR (South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters) other
recruitment groups are
conducting drives for registration of Asians/South Asians. These include
Marrowminded
(phone: 703-243-0853), based in Arlington, Virginia; Asian for Miracle
Marrow Matches (phone:
888-236-4673) in Los Angeles, California; Asian American Donor Program
(Website:
nonprofitadmin.com/aadp/) in Oakland, California; and Heart of America
Bone Marrow
Registry (phone: 800-366-6710).

A donor must between 18 and 60 years old and in good health, according
to the NMDP.

The first step is a quick blood test to determine the tissue type and it
will be entered under a
code number in the NMDP registry. If one is identified as a potential
match, further blood
samples will be necessary to verify the match.
