Jaffna has been well known as the place of
Siddhars throughout Tamil literature.

For example, the greatest 20th century Tamil poet
Bharatiyar's guru was a "yAzhppANa sAmi" who he met in Pondicheri.
One can read poems on him by Bharatiyar.

For general readers, the hoary Siddha tradition
among Tamils can be read in R. Ganapathy's book,
and also, K. Zvelebil, The Poets of the Powers
(reprinted in USA as well). Many do not know
about the living tradition of Tamil siddhars.

There was an Austrian monk, GauribAla.
Along with Agehananda Bharati, GauribAla
was another Shakta monk from the West.
GauribAla was a disciple of Yogaswami of Jaffna.

There was a novel written about Gauribala,
by the secretary of The Mother at Aurobindo Ashram, Pondichery.
Does anyone here know the novel or its author's name.
Yogasami comes in that novel too.

Gauribala had a tatoo, "cummA iru" in tamil - the mahvAkyam
from Jaffna Yogasami. Satguru S. Subramuniyaswami
started his paper as Saivism Today, then changed
to attract wider audience.
