Not yet.
It is made up of 32 verses of the 'kattaLai kali
thuRai' metre. The number 32 is very significant.
The first verse describes the appearance of the
Devi Vaaraahi and attributes the qualities of the
navarathna(nine noble gems) to nine of Her organs.
1. iru kulzai kOmaLam, thAL pushparAgam, iraNdu kaNNum
kuru maNi nIlam; kai kOmEdhagam; nakam kUr vaiyiram;
thirunagai muththu; kanivAy pavaLam; siRandha valli
maragadha nAmam thirumEniyum pachchai mANikkamE.
(The short vowels are small letters and the long vowels
are capital).
'Valai' is ' Bala' who is worshipped by the Siddhars. There is a
Siddhar who is known as 'vAlai chiththar'. MahAKavi Subrahmanya
Bharathi sings, "vAlai kumariyadI kaNNammA..."
The second verse describes the yantra.
The Siddhars are not - I repeat, are not - atheists as
many would wrongly beleive. They take one of Siva Vakyar's
verses and not understanding the deep meaning in it, they
would say that it is atheism. But they have not read the other
499 verses that Siva VAkyar has sung.
Many Siddhars were worshippers of BAlA, BhuvanA,
Vaaraahi, and several other Devis.
BAlA is known as SiddhEswari and Siddha MAtA.
The majority of the verses in Vaaraahi Maalai
reflect - to put it in a very subjective manner - violence.
But then, that is also an attribute of life. In fact, and
essential aspect of life.
Vaaraahi Maalai has always fascinated me, because I
held the palmyra leaf manuscript of Vaaraahi Maalai in
my hands in the puja room of the Great Siddhar Muthu vaduga
Naadhar.
This embarked me on a private Odessey which lasted
for 16 years.
