THIRUVEMPAVAI – DAY FIVE – SONG FIVE

Transliteration

mAlaRiyA nAnmukanum kAna malaiyinai nAm
pOLaRivOm enRulla pokkankale pEcum
pAlURu thEn vAyp patiRI katai tharavAy
gnAlamE vinnE piRavE aRivariyAn
kOlamum nammai AtkontaruLik kOthAttum
cIlamum pAtic civanE enru
Olam itinum unarAy unarAy kan
Elak kuLali paricElOr empavay.

Translation

As sweet tongued as a combination of milk and honey!
Unbar the doors.
Idle talk had it been yours when you claimed
That we could comprehend Him the mountainous,
Whom Thirumal as well as Brahma could not.
He is so great as to render Himself inscrutable
To the World and heaven.
We sing in praise of His form and condescencion.
What if we sing his name civa civa so loud,
You dont seem to realise Him.
Perfumed haired! Come and take Him as the Prize.

The drama of the earnest calling the sluggish continues in the fifth song
too. The words of the sluggish are quoted against her first in the song. She
seems to have claimed once that they could easily comprehend God though He
is inscrutable to both Vishnu and Brahma even when he had made himself as
obvious as a mountain. But then, to lie abed when the others had assembled
to observe the pavai makes them hold her claim only as idle talk, however
sweetly uttered.

They for their part have this to say. God is beyond the comprehension of the
people of the earth and the gods of the heaven. They were singing in praise
of His form and condescencion. They chant His name so loud as to make the
chanting appear like a long wail. However loud it may be, it is woebegone
since the maid withindoors does not seem to hear it at all.

The Hindu concept of God resolves two aspects of God – transcendence and
immanence. God is undoubtedly such a transcendent reality that none of
either world or the other world could ever hope to comprehend him. And yet,
he is so simple and condescending that his presence is so obvious. So the
song is a call to experience him rather than try to understand him.

Manivacakar shall be quoted here. Even pretended devotion is cause enough
for God’s grace. And unimpeded devotion to him would make him appear in
front of the devotee of His own accord. Thus the song, along with many such
songs in various pieces of Hindu literature, can be said to resolve the
apparent contradiction between the inscrutability and condescending of God.
