Translation
Dear Deer! You have betrayed your promise made yesterday
That you would come and wake us up.
Tell us, which direction did your promise flee, with no qualms.
Hasnt it yet dawned to you?
Heavens, Earth and others do not comprehend His greatness.
He is the one who condescends to redeem us with His grace.
Such is His prevening Grace. We sing in praise of Him.
Unbar the doors for us.
Let us together sing His praise –
Your, our and every other’s Lord!
The closeness of friendship is great indeed. Sundaramurthy had been the
friend to the Lord. Naturally the personal proximity that we find in the
Tevaram is not to be found elsewhere.
Don’t even the most sensitive patiently listen to the upbraiding of friends?
The sixth song of Thiruvempavai presents the maid who remains patient even
as the other maids tease her.
What was it that you said yesterday? That you would come to us and wake us
up from sleep. Where did your promise flee? Aren’t you ashamed of not having
fulfilled a promise? Or perhaps it has not dawned to you.
Now see! Deer like darling! It is dawn indeed. Wake up at least now. We have
come singing the praise of the One whose greatness is beyond the
comprehension of all. At least for the sake of us who have come in search of
you, you may have to unbar the doors. Come out. We will sing in praise of
our Lord, the God.
Heavens, earth and others do not comprehend His greatness. His prowess is
beyond measure. Mind and language are inadequate means to realise Him.
But the souls have a short life and limited perceptions. Is it not futile
that these souls desire to have God? He has filled the skies, earth and
everywhere. He is the water and the burning fire together. His essence is
beyond the ken of the human thought.
And such a One has for His temple the hearts of the devotees. He would rise
as sweet honey in the hearts of the devotees. Such a condescending greatness
is His. It is such apparently contradictory but really complementary aspects
of God that this song celebrates.
Thus there are two distinct aspects in the sixth song of Thiruvempavai. The
first makes us understand the significance of friendship in the phenomenal
world. The second aspect hails God as the Transcendent Reality and
Condescending Grace together.
Did not Siva appear as a humble labourer for the sake of Vanthi? Did he stop
with just appearing thus? He went to the extent of bearing with whipping. It
is His condescending and concern that account for the possibility of
realising Him.
