Transliteration

What a pity, dear! Are these part of your tricks?
You would usually utter the name of the Lord Siva
Even when you hear the bugles from the temple -
The bugles of Him who transcends the comprehension of gods!
Even as we start uttering His name,
You would melt in devotion like wax in fire.
We hail him as our Lord, our King, our Elixir.
Even then you remain untouched!
Perhaps you are still asleep.
You lie like the weak willed simpleton.
What a pity that sleep can hold you so fast!

Let us begin with what has been missed yesterday.

In the first five songs of Thiruvempavai, the maids tried to make the maid
get up. They insisted that she opened the doors.
In Thiruppavai, the drama consists of one of the maids remaining indoors and
the others imploring her to join them through a series of songs.
Thiruvempavai explication would look at the scene differently.

In each of the first five songs different maids are asked to get up. These
maids stand for the nine aspects of Shakthi, Siva’s consort.

In the first song Aspect Manonmani calls upon Aspect Sarvaputhamani to wake
up.

In the second song, Manonmani and Sarvaputhamani together implore Sakthi
Palappirathamani.

In the third song Aspect Palavikarani is asked to come and join the pavai
observance.

In the fourth song the four Aspects go to wake Sakthi Kalavikarani up.

Then Kali, Rowthri, Cettai and Vamai, the other Aspects are implored to join
the pavai.

The Saiva metaphysics believes that Creation was ordained when the Nine
Aspects affected Asuttha Mayai. Therefore any worship of Siva begins with an
invocation to the Nine Aspects of Shakthi. Thiruvempavai follows suit.

There is a change of direction in the drama of pavai with the sixth song.
>From songs that woke the maids up, the sixth through the ninth songs report
the conversation of the maids as they marched in pavai observance.

The speaker in the sixth song is someone like a spiritual teacher. The deer
like maid is reminded of the necessity to wean herself off the worldly
snares.
The seventh song continues with the same tone. “The pity of it dear, the
pity of it! What could you do against it?” is the tone of condescending on
the part of the speaker.

You have joined us of course. And yet you have not yet become fully awake.
Siva is so glorious that even gods cannot realise him. When the bugles from
His temple sound, it was enough to inspire devotion in you. You would start
calling the name of Siva with such fervour. Right at the beginning of the
name of Siva being uttered you used to melt at heart like wax in fire. But
now we praise him as our Lord, our King and our Elixir. In spite of all our
cries in devotion, you remain unaffected. But then, what could you do? So
strong is the hold of sleep on you. It is sleep that has prevented you from
doing what is natural to you.

Every individual has his or her own inherent qualities. Such qualities
should not be perverted. If one were to act against one’s own nature, it
would lead to confusion in action. Nature is orderly. It is spontaneous.
Forgetfulness, sleep, intoxication, confusion and bad company should not be
given place to. If they are allowed to influence one, nature will be
perverted and there will be only confusion in action.

That is the message of Thiruvalluvar. Valluvar would also insist upon
attending to one’s business at the appropriate time. Such of those
businesses that could be attended after sleep could be attended after sleep.
But there are those acts which are to be carried out without giving way to
sleep.

To do what should not be done would undo one’s nature and life. There should
be no delay in doing what is to be done. The maid who is by nature given to
devotion should not be adversely affected by delay, forgetfulness, laziness,
and sleep. That is the concern of the speaker. She has to remain anchored in
her swadharma - her essential nature.
