As the cock crows, all the birds start chirping everywhere.
With the seven tuned music the conches boom everywhere.
Dont you hear our song in praise of
The Supreme Paranjothi, the Supreme Grace
The Supreme Ideal?
What slumber is this, dear? Tell us!
Has the love for the Sea of Love come to this?
He stands out at the time of the Deluge as the only Existent.
Let us sing in praise of Him who has given
Half His Body to his consort.
The eighth song of Thiruvempavai can be said to have dramatised a situation
of lethargy. However close and unmistakable does the best of the best lie,
the lethargic have no way of cognising them. The devotees are such that they
can lead even the best of men. Should one in their group give herself up to
lethargy?
The eighth song of Thiruvempavai expresses the anxiety that one among the
maids assembled for the pavai observance had fallen a prey to lethargy.
The crowing cock had made all the birds chirp everywhere. The conches
declare the awakening of the Lord in the temple. The content of their song?
It is the Supreme Grace of Paranjothi. Would anyone lie abed in spite of all
these sounds? Lo, one is, you see! Would one sleep as she does? You betray
your claim for love for Him by ignoring all these. When life as a whole and
even all materials get lost in the Deluge, He would remain as the only
Existent. He has given one half of His body to his consort. Come and join us
at least hereafter to sing in praise of him.
The maid who is awakened thus is none but our own soul. With no desire for
the Ideal, the soul assumes the quality of anything it associates with and
is afflicted with the ego, passion and illusion. Manivasakar awakens such a
soul which has lost its longing caught in the snare of sleep.
In one of his hymns, Nammalvar would say, "The moment you give up
attachment, you achieve salvation." The detachment he speaks about is not
renunciation of the worldly. He speaks about the supreme renunciation of the
self and the ego.
By implication this song invokes the dawn of wisdom at the disappearance of
the darkness of ignorance. For such awakening, devotion is a precondition.
Such devotion can be obtained when one worships His feet inspired by His
grace.
The significance of the song lies in the fact that it indicates the lucky
combination of time, occasion and association.
The crowing cock is the call of wisdom. The words of the master along with
the sound of the conch is meant to dispel ignorance. The pavai observance
indicates the occasion. The maids are those who are wise enough to guide and
they stand for the right association.
Valluvar has also said that you can have the whole world for yourself if you
work at the right time and place. He has also said that one should seek the
association of the well informed who also know what is proper.
