THIRUVEMPAVAI – DAY ELEVEN – SONG ELEVEN
Transliteration
moyyAr thatampoykai pukku mukErennak
kaiyaR kutainthu kutainthu un kazal pAti
aiyA vazi atiyOm vAznthOm kAn Ar azal pOl
ceyyA vennIRAti celvA ciRumarunkul
maiyAr thatankan matanthai manavALA

Translation
O Lord! Fiery red in complexion!
Ash smeared! Our Treasure!
Consort to the thin waisted and large eyed Parvathi!
We have bathed in the thickly flowered pond
Beating the water noisily and singing of Your feet all the while.
We have been your vassals for generations and
Have been blessed with proper life.
We have also obtained salvation as part of Your holy deeds.
Bless us with similar boons for ever.
The maids had woken up for the pavai observance. They had also woken up
those who joined them late. Together they had all reached the pond. They had
their ritualistic dip in the pond. Their bodies felt fulfilled and their
hearts also felt the same.
Now that they have achieved physical cleanliness, they long for purity of
heart and, beyond that, purity of soul. That makes them sing of the feet of
their Lord even as they bathe. In their song they bring out their
relationship with God. They belonged to a line of generations of devotees.
They had also achieved the bliss of those who keep themselves in the path of
devotion. Whatever is there to befall is to be taken care of by the Lord
Himself. Having fulfilled their obligations, rightfully do they demand of
God the proceeds of their devotion. Such is the song.
The fiery fair body of the Lord smeared with holy ash reminds to them of
embers overladen with ashes. Those who cannot see the embers behind the ash
cannot realise God.
God is called the Treasure to the Devotees. Gnanasampanthar would also say
the same, “To sing in praise of our Treasure is our treasure.”
They declare that it is but the divine boon that they had for their husbands
devotees to Lord Siva.
Their prayer is that they should be blessed hereafter too as they had been
blessed for ever.
Let us see what Thirunavukkarasar considers to be the prize to the devotees
from the divine.
Even while lying as a foetus in the womb, I had been thinking of
Your Feet.
When I obtained a form, I chanted Your Names in my songs.
With Your grace, I smeared the holy ash on my forehead in the name
of Siva.
Having done all these, what does he pray for?
Lord of Pathirip Puliyur! Grant me the bliss of attaining You!
