Vidyasankar Sundaresan has frequented written on this subject in Indology and elsewhere. Here's one comment entitled "Real history of the Kanchi math."
Sringeri Mutt's page contains a different chronology:
http://www.sringeri.org/guru-par.htm
Their time line puts the Adi Sankarar at A.D 820. If their tradition that Sankara was born to the Nambudiri Brahmana couple, Sivaguru and Aryamba, ina little village called Kaladi in Kerala is accepted by the other Sankara mutts as well, then we are on a firmer ground in putting Adi Sankarar's eraat about the time that Sringeri Mutt assigns him.
Sringeri Mutt's page also states that Sankara was a disciple of Govinda BhagavatpAda who himself was the disciple of GauDapAda, the famous author of the MANDUkya kArikAs. It also states that Sankara debated with Buddhist philosophers, with followers of sAm.khya and with pUrva mImAm.sakas, the followers of vedic ritualism. It further states that Sankara sought out kumArilabhaTTa, the foremost proponent of the pUrva mImAm.sA in his age, but bhaTTa was on his deathbed and directed Sankara to viSvarUpa, his disciple. viSvarUpa is sometimes identified with maNDana miSra.
So, any date assigned to Sankara's era also needs to satisfy the dates for GauDapAda, kumArila bhaTTa, and the era during which Buddhist, sAm.khya andpUrva mImAm.saka philosophies vied with each other.
What were the intellectual traditions that dominated the Ninth century Tamil country(that included the modern Kerala)? Certainly, the Bhakti movementis one influence. What kind of universities did Kanchi have at that time?
