THIRUPPALLIYELUCCI – AN INTRODUCTION
There are quite a few common elements between Thiruppavai and Thiruvempavai.
There are also certain differences.
Both the pieces of pavai literature alike celebrate the assembly of the
maids, their march to the pond and their ritualistic bathing. Nacciyar
accommodates in Thiruppavai the songs of the maids intent on invoking God’s
grace in the form of appealing to God to wake up for the day. Manickavasakar
’s Thiruvempavai stops with the assembly, march and bathing of the maids.
God is appealed to wake up in a series of ten songs under the title
Thiruppalliyelucci.
We are not able to identify the singers of Thiruppalliyelucci with the
singers of Thiruvempavai. The sex of the singers and age differences are not
mentioned in Thiruppalliyelucci and therefore all the devotees who have
assembled in the temple are to be taken to sing the Thiruppalliyelucci.
How are the songs in the series to be understood? Is God woken up? Look at
it as symbolic of waking up the Divine within ourselves. You will find a
transvaluation in them. Cekkilar would write,
Thiruppalliyelucci dispels the darkness within those who smear holy ash
As well it as dismisses the darkness in the world.
Does God sleep and does He see any darkness? Thiruppalliyelucci is an
attempt to negate our own sleep and darkness. It is an invocation of the
sense of the Divine within each of us.
