I don't think so.
"el" means "light". The connection of Maari
with "puuvODu" (flower-pot, literally "thI-c-cTTi"
has been explained in one of my posts.
The association of devadasis with Maari,
sULe "devadAsi" (literally 'flame') and
mANikkaththi etc., in Tamil also support
my take, I think.
The meaning of jamadagni also points
in that direction.
