Translation

Though spread through all the elements
You neither come to be nor cease to be.
Poets who realise do nothing but
Compose, sing and dance.
Heard have we not of those who have found You.
The King of Thirupperunthurai of cold watered fields,
Beyond out thoughts, come to us!
Dispel our distress and grace us, O Lord, Wake up!

Almost all religions celebrate three attributes of the Divine -
Transcendence, Immanence and Condescending Grace. The fifth song of
Thiruppalliyelucci also celebrates these three attributes and invokes his
protective grace.

The song begins with the declaration that he is spread through all the
elements that make up this phenomenal world, of both the sentient and the
non-sentient. The eighteenth song of Thiruvempavai is more explicit.

(He) manifests himself as man, woman, eunuch
As well as the bright sky and earth
And yet remains beyond all.

That God remains an eternal existence is a reiteration of the ninth song of
Thiruvempavai.

You are the oldest of the oldest
You are the newest of the newest

One could only celebrate such a God in composing songs, singing them and
dancing. He is beyond the human ken is the implication.

Nammalvar has also said,

You remain everything and everybody
You remain immanent in the religion of each
You are beyond the senses five
You are the deity of feelings.

Similarly

Our Flame remains bright
Beyond explication by thought and words

and

You are the Perfection
Beyond the Vedic wisdom, arts and the experience of true devotees.

are also to be recalled in context.

There is an opera within the play Manonmaniyam by Sundaranar. It narrates
the story of the love of Goddess Sivakami for Siva. Sivakami says,
My woeful lot is it to go into the wide world
In search of any who has seen or heard of Him.

So to realise God is possible only with His grace. Unless he condescends to
reveal Himself, there is no way of realising Him. The prayer of the song is
the same - “Come to us!” - Coming to us, you should dispel our distress.

The ‘distress’ here is to be properly perspectivised. It is not a distress
either of poverty or ailment or any other exigent condition of embodied
existence.

The last line of the first verse in Nammalvar’s Thiruvaymoli reads,

Worship the distress dispelling dazzling feet of His, my heart!

The distress is the result of the binding karma which causes this birth and
which in turn accounts for the exigent conditions thereof. Thus the prayer
here is for severing the binding of karma. The prayer is for the bliss of no
birth hereafter.
