So many of Your devotees
Unswayed by the exigencies of the world,
Unattached to anything whatsoever
Assume the human state of colirium-smeared-eyed
And worship You, my Lady’s Lord!
Lord Civa of Thirupperunthurai of blooming lotuses!
Our Lord redeeming us severing our binding to birth!
Wake up and bless us!
“Lord of Uma! Lord of the lotus blooming Thirupperunthurai! The seasoned and
renounced assume the guise of ladies in love and worship You. You are the
Lord who can sever our bindings. Reach us to bless and redeem us!” - That is
the prayer of the sixth song of Thiruppalliyelucci.
There are two types of devotees par excellence mentioned in the first two
lines of the song. There are those who remain unimpressed and unaffected by
anything that happens in the phenomenal world. They remain unswayed.
Lao Tsu speaks of such wisdom in the following lines:
Who can find repose in a muddy world?
By lying still, it becomes clear.
Who can maintain his calm for long?
By activity it comes back to life.
To remain absolutely inactive requires a certain effort. The wise spoken
about in the first line of the song are those who have nullified even the
effort to be effortless and therefore they remain unaffected by anything
around them.
Those spoken about in the next line have renounced everything. They have
renounced even the desire for redemption insofar as redemption is a personal
bliss. The only desire they have is to have unimpeded communion with God.
When even such seasoned and renounced great forget their nature in loving
devotion to God, these devotees find themselves so bound up with the bodily
existence which they by themselves cannot sever. Therefore they pray to God
to sever the binding of bodily existence and redeem them.
Bodily existence has as its root accumulated karma and therefore the prayer
is to undo the accumulated burden of karma which causes bodily existence.
