You must get Lavanya to answer that:-)

The Amerindians were smoking tobacco. It was a sign
of peace and tranquility.
Warring parties used to smoke together when they
wanted to make peace. This was known as the peace pipe.
Europeans picked up smoking from them. Sir Walter Raleigh
came smoking to Queen Elizabeth's court. Somebody threw
a bucket of water and dowsed him, shouting, 'Sir Walter
is on fire!"

Snuff came into fashion soon after that.
It was 'The Fashion' during the Hanoverian rule.
A snuff box was a sign of esteem and social status.
There was a very refined way of sniffing the
snuff and sneezing.
It was taken as a pinch with the right hand.
Only the thumb and the tip of the fore-finger were
used.
The left palm was held with the thumb jutting out
at right angles to the palm. It was held stiff.
In that position, two of the extensor tendons
would stand out. There will be a depression between these
two tendons.
The pinch of snuff is placed in that depression.
The hand is then held over the nostril and then....zzzzrrfff.

You take out a hanky and suppress and stiffle the sneeze.

If you want to enjoy the snuff fully, you emit a
series of explosive sneezes.

Then you look around at the world through your
bleary teary eyes.

You fffeeeeeellll the sensation of cobwebs clearing
away, dissipating, vapourizing, vanishing from your
thinking aparatus.

Haah!

That was an art and a ritual.

The depression of the hand came to be known as the
'Anatomical Snuff Box'. Cocaine users seem to be following
that technique now.

It was introduced by the Europeans and it became
a fashionable and classy thing. Educated people who
were involved in a lot of brain work used snuff more
profusely than others. Thus it became a sign of the
intellectuals also.
But among Tamils, chewing tobacco was more
prevalent than sniffing snuff. The last was cigar smoking.
Cigarette and beedi changed that.

Who can forget the famous three -

T.A.S. Rathinam Pattanam Podi
Tha Pi Chokkalaal Raam Sate Beedi
Nijaam Lady Pugaiyilai.

Sniffing something in the form of snuff was already
practiced in Indian Medicine. It was a form and method
of administering medicine.

Certain medical stuff were powdered and used as snuff.

This was known as 'Naasika ChuurNam'.

Any further things on snuff, Suresh might put up
some links.

He seems to be 'The Lord of the Links'.
