THIRUPPALIYELUCCI – DAY TWENTY SEVEN – SONG SEVEN

Transliteration

athu paLac cuvaiyena amuthena aRithaRku
arithena eLithena amararum aRiyAr
ithu avan thiruvuru ivan avan enavE
enkaLai Antu kontu inku eLuntharuLum
mathuvaLar poLil thiruvuththarakOsa
mankaiyuLLAy thirupperunthuRai mannA
ethu emaip paNi koLum ARu athu ketpOm
emperumAn paLLi eLuntharuLAyE.

Translation

It is the sweetness of the fruit, the elixir;
So accessible and yet inscrutable even to gods,
Either in form or in aspects.
As such You appear in Your Divinity
At Thiruvuththarakosaimankai of honeyed flowers,
Lord of Thirupperunthurai,
Grant us the means of our redemption.
Wake up and bless us!

“He is there at Thiruvutharakosaimankai of honeyed flowers. He is the Lord
of Thirupperunthurai. He is spread through the world like sweetness in the
fruit. He is the antidote to the affliction of embodied existence. He is
beyond the reason of man. He is accessible to those who love Him. Even the
gods do not know Him in terms of His form and attributes. Why should we
trouble ourselves with such speculations? we only make an appeal to show us
the means to find our salvation. Our Lord, come to be amidst us.” Such is
the burden of the seventh song of Thiruppalliyelucci.

The Saiva as well as the Vaishnava literature reiterate that God is the
Inscrutable. They are equally insistent in claiming that He has such
condescending grace as to make Himself available anywhere in any form to His
true devotees.

The Vedas become helpless when contemplating
That He is neither the elements nor the embodied
Neither the sentient nor the others
While He goes about the streets of Madurai
Selling bangles and firewood.

These are the lines from Thiruvalaiyatal Puranam. The condescending grace of
God is celebrated in terms of an episode in which God is said to have
appeared in Madurai as a hawker.
Manivacakar says that He is the inscrutable and yet quite easily accessible
to the devotees. He further says,

When the whole world laughs asking us
How is it that civa who stood so magnificent
As to remain inscrutable to both Hari and Brahma,
Comes to serve you? Wont we but laugh at their ignorance?

Tholkappiyam identifies the quest for pleasure as common to all the
sentient. The highest pleasure is afforded by religious practice. Sundarar
says that religious practice bestows on man the pleasures of the life here
and now and in the life hereafter too.
The seventh song of Thiruppalliyelucci reiterates the same. The sweetness of
the fruit is a matter of the palpable. The sweetness of amritha, the elixir,
is a matter of assumption and scriptural saying. Thus the sweetness of the
fruit symbolises the pleasures of this life and that of elixir symbolises
the pleasures of the life hereafter.
The song has another point of significance too. Since man by himself cannot
realise the means for his salvation, the grace of God makes such means known
to him. That is why the prayer, “Grant us the means of our redemption.”
