Translation

Inaccessible to gods in heaven
The Ideal! You have made us, Your devotees,
To come and live on the earth.
We are the devotees for generations
To the Lord at Thirupperunthurai.
You are the elixir from the sea.
You dwell in the thoughts of loving devotees.
You become the soul unto the world.
Wake up and bless us.

The ninth song of Thiruppalliyelucci is not a song of explicit prayer as the
preceding eight songs. It is just a song of ccelebration of the Divine. His
inaccessibility to gods in heaven notwithstanding, He had been graceful
enough to make the soul be born in a body.
Life gets transvalued then. Some of the existentialists would look at human
existence as purposeless in a purposeless world. But human life does have a
specific purpose. The soul has to be cured of its afflictions ot be seasoned
for eternal life. Embodied existence thus becomes a curative process which
is underscored in the song.

God is addressed the bliss imparting honey in the eyes of the devotee. Honey
is not only sweet. It is also medicinal. It is purgative as a medicine.
Therefore God as honey becomes more curative and purgative than medicative.

Amrita, the elixir that has taken the gods beyond death is supposed to have
been obtained from the churning of the milky ocean. Thus it becomes the
means of bestowing deathlessness on the devotees. The elixir that makes
devotees deathless is none but God Himself. This address related with the
previous address makes us understand that by bestowing birth on the soul,
God provides it with an opportunity to get rid of afflictions and thus be
seasoned to attain deathlessness.

The next address is quite significant in context. God is beyond
comprehension. He is the Inscrutable. At the same time, His condescending
grace makes Him available to the devotees everywhere.

Let us look at it from another perspective. The limitless God is perceived
within certain limitations beyond which the human psyche cannot traverse.
The Inscrutable is then comprehended. The Infinite becomes Finite. Perhaps
that is the ultimate truth of the concept of God.
