Om Sivaaya nama:

Dear Friends,

Things were different when Tamils/Hindus were confined
within the realms of 30 degrees of longitude. They were in
India, Ceylon, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Malaya, and Vietnam.
Although a number of them went to West Indies, Seychelles,
Mauritius, and South Africa, the bulk of them were living in
South and South East Asia.
In these places, the time zonal difference amounted to
only 2 hours.
So it was not much difficult to fix and observe festivals.

But now things are not the same.

We are spread out over a space of 310 degrees out of
360 degrees. New Zealand is near the International Date Line.
And California is far far away.
There is a span of 21 hours running along various
time zones.
That is why there is so much confusion.

Let us see the criteria for fixing Mahaa Siva Rathri.

1. The month shoud be Maasi.

2. It should be KrishNa Matcham .

3. The 14th day - Chaturdasi.

4. The period from sun-set to sun-rise.

How do you fix it for your own place?

Its like fixing a drink of Martinni.
Take a glass; put in some ice cubes; pour in the drink;
add some water; and put in an olive.
Easy steps.

Just follow the criteria in steps.

People have to fix the day according to the time-zone
that are living.

1. See the pancanggam for Krishna patcha chaturdasi for Maasi
and find out, at what time in Indian Standard Time, does the
Chaturdasi start.

2. Plus or minus your own time zone.

3. Find out your own sun-set and sun-rise.

4. Divide the night time into 4 segments of 'jaamam' .

There you are!

You have Siva Rathri.

And you don't even need an olive!

Fasting is observed during the day-time period preceding
the night of SivaRathri. Wakefulnes is observed during the night.
You should not sleep during the day-time of the following
place. There is no hang-over period absolutely.
Hence wakefulness is for 24 + 12 = 26 hours.

Regards

JayBee
