They are not the same.
'Caste' is derived from the Latin word - 'castus' which
means 'unmixed, pure'. It passed into Portuguese as 'casta' -
which means 'breed, race'.
'Cast' comes from Old Nordic word 'kasta' - which means
'to throw'.
