Dear Dr Jaybee,
In spite of the fact that they have advanced
technologies of scanning and filming and printing,
what is not understandable is why the books are so
very evry evry expensive.
If we are to revive these books so that the
younger
generation would like to possess them, then these
books should come in cheap.
They are the other way around.
The price is a serious disincentive.
They should be subsidised and the distribution
network
has to be improved.
You are absolutely right Dr. I do not know the system
by with which AES is pricing the books. They are
really exorbitant.
>From my publishing background, I do not see any reason
for this pricing. I think it should be even more easy
for us.
If I am right, Dept. of Tamil Development
(Dr.M.Rajendran - Director, a well-known writer too),
is funding these kind of reprints. Also there is
clause, if I am right, in Library purchases that while
purchasing reprint Old/classic editions, they should
go in for more number of copies.
Above all, through proper networking, it should be
possible for the publishers to sell the first reprint,
within the Tamil community.
Recently, I came to know about two three
organisations.
1. Ulaga Tamizh Arakkattalai (I have an article about
this orgn. in my site http://tamil.sify.com)
2. Thamizham
I do not have much details about them. They may also
be in the process of reviving these old materials.
Probably, what we need is FOCUS and COMMITMENT.
regards
venkatesh r
