Dear Friends,
In one of the threads, Vivek commented as follows:
"At the outset it needs to be mentioned that tamil WAS in usage in most
temples in Tamil Nadu until the 19th century. Many vaiShNava temples still
follow this custom (as the sri vaiShNava religion is considered to be ubhaya
vedAntam i.e. equal respect to sanskrit and tamil ).
The saiva religion of the tamils is of course devoted to tamil and it was
quite common to hear the devotional works of the tamil saiva saints being
recited in saiva temples in tamil nadu.
This situation changed in the 19th century because most of the saiva temples
were taken away from the Adheenams ( the traditional guardians of the
temples ) and handed over to individual managers. This started the headlong
decline in tamil usage in saiva temples."
The above is an interesting observation. It raises a few issues:
a. If the change in management of Saiva temples took place en-bloc in the
19th century, it could mean that only a governmental authority or its
near-equivalent could have achieved such a change. What prompted this change
and why was it allowed to happen?
b. If Vaishnava Temples are still able to continue the tradition of using
Tamil in temples, how was this made possible vis a vis Saiva temples?
c. If Vaishnava temples have been using Tamil with an unbroken tradition,
this upholding can serve as a role model for revival of Tamil in Saiva
temples today in its various aspects. Has the use of Tamil in Vaishnava
temples been documented?
d. If the removal of Atheenams as primary guardian for Saiva temples and
along with it the confiscation of temple land had been the reasons for the
poor maintenance and ruin of several temples in Tamil Nadu, I wish to find
out if the Vaishanva temples are doing any better and if so, why?
e. Was there ever any central administration and maintenance of temples in
Tamil history?
Thank you.
Regards,
Sathia,
KL, Malaysia.
