According to various Siberian tribes, the eagle was the very first
shaman, sent to humankind by the gods to heal sickness and suffering.
Frustrated that human beings could not understand its speech or ways,
the bird mated with a human woman, and she soon gave birth to a child
from whom all shamans are now descended.
In a mystic cloak of bird feathers, the shaman chants, drums and
prays him- or herself into a trance. The soul takes flight, soaring
into the spirit world beyond our everyday perception. (Great care
must be taken in this exercise, lest the wing-borne soul forgets its
way back home.)
Likewise, the shamans of Finland call upon their eagle ancestors to
lead them into the spirit realms and bring them safely back again.
Shamans, like eagles, are blessed (or cursed) with the ability to
cross between the human world and the realm of the gods, the lands of
the living and the lands of the dead.
Despite the healing powers this gives them (the "medicine" of their
bird ancestry), men and women in shamanic roles were often seen as
frightening figures, half-mad by any ordinary measure, poised between
co-existent worlds, fully present in none.
The Buriats of Siberia traced their lineage back to an eagle and a
swan, honoring the ancestral swan-mother with migration ceremonies
each autumn and spring.

'ஊனக்கண் பாசம் உணராப் பதியை' என்று தொடங்கும் சிவஞானபோதத்தின் ஒன்பதாம்
நூற்பாவினை விளக்க வரும் பாடலொன்றைப் பார்ப்போம்:
கண்டதை யன்றன் றெனவிட்டுக் கண்டசத்தாய்
அண்டனை ஆன்மாவில் ஆய்ந்துணரப் - பண்டணைந்த
ஊனத்தைத் தான்விடுமா றுத்தமனின், ஒண்கருட
சானத்தில் தீர்விடம்போற் றான்.
அசத்தாய்க் கண்டதை மெய்யன்று மெய்யன்று எனப் பற்றுவிட்டு, மெய்யாய்க் கண்ட
சத்துப்பொருளாய் இறைவனை ஆன்ம உணர்வில் நுணுகியுணரப் பிறவியில் முன்
அணைந்துவிட்ட மாயைக் கருவிகளை இறைவன் திருவருளால் உயிர்கள் விடும் வகையானது,
ஒளிமிக்க கருடத்தேனிப்பு கொண்டு பாம்பின் நஞ்சு தீர்வதைப் போலத்தான் என்று
சுட்டுகிறார் சிவஞானமுனிவர்.
கருட சானம் என்பது கருடத்தேனிப்பு. அண்டத்தின் கருடனன்று! இங்கே கூறுவது மந்திரக்
கருடனாதலால் ஒண்கருடன் என வந்தது. மந்திர ஒலிகளின் மாண்பு இதனாலும் விளங்கும்.
பாம்பு கடித்து விட்டால் அதன் நஞ்சு ஏறுவதற்கு முன் கருடமந்திரம் சொல்லிக் கருடனைத்
தேனித்தால் நஞ்சு தீர்கிறது. அது தானே தீராது. பாம்புக்குக் கருடன் பகையாதலால்
கருடனைத் தேனிக்க நேர்ந்தது. இறைசக்தி முதலில் ஒலியிலும் பின்பு அந்நச்சுப் பொருளி
லும் நின்று நஞ்சை நீக்கியது.
தேனிப்பவரின் உண்மைக்கும், மனவலிமைக்கும் தக்கபடி சிவசக்தி பெருகிவரும்!
நஞ்சும் அவ்வண்ணமே நீங்கும். மந்திரக் கருடனை ஏற்றி விடம் தீர்ப்பது போல்
மந்திர ஒலிகளால், திருவைந்தெழுத்தால் தேனித்திருக்க எங்கும் நிறை அண்டனை
ஆன்மா ஆய்ந்துணரும்.
மேலும் விளக்கம் வேண்டுவோர்க்கு, பாரதியின் சந்திரமதி புலம்பல் புரிந்த யோகியாரோ,
ஞானவெட்டியாரோ தெருட்ட வேண்டும்.
மருத்துவரைய்யா ஓய்வாயிருக்கட்டும்!
