Dear Friends,
In thinking further about the above subject, a few things occur to me:
a. That the issue of decline of Tamil in Tamil Nadu temples needs to be seen
in its correct perspective. This is not a fight with Sanskrit or with any
other languages. It is simply a desire of Tamils to see that the rightful
position of Tamil in the temples
as it has been in history but was interrupted mainly by colonial powers, be
restored.
b. In post independent India, there needs to be offical policy to uphold
traditions of Tamils and to provide active support for research, development
and promotion. This could work very well for the government in power in
winning over the population as well as spin-off effects in terms of economic
prosperity such as increasing toursit potential.
c. That the Tamils in general need to come up with a working model of how
the Temples should be governed today taking into consideration the
following:
i. the worldwide spread of Tamils.
ii. usage of Tamil
iii. playing the traditional roles of an educator of Tamil philososphy and
culture, promoter of arts (such as painting, scultpture, architecture,
dances, music etc)
iv. A place of congregation for Tamils to promote greater interaction.
v. Networking among Tamils, now extended to cover Internet. Yes, I am
proposing that every Temple in Tamil Nadu should be linked through Internet.
vi. Keeping a database on all Tamils in the area so that greater
interaction is encouraged. I know for a fact that the traditional chettiar
run temples have been doing this (for chettiars) for a long time, even in
Malaysia.
vii. Playing the role of counselling and support for the needy Tamils.
viii. A symbol of Tamil faith, confidence and progress.
We need some champions for this in Tamil Nadu such those from the
Universities, major temples, Government authorities etc.
Any suggestions on suitable persons to whom this can be conveyed for action
and government endorsement?
With best regards,
Sathia,
KL, Malaysia.
