This is one of the objects that was brought into
India by the Turks. It is actually an Uzbekian word -
Tharbooz or Tharboosh.
Usually names of alien objects can get familiarised
in due course as they get spoken often. They usually attain
a more localised form.
We have anglicised Tamil words like Mulligatawny,
Coir, Cattamaran, Cooly, etc. They are MiLagu ThaNNi,
KayiRu, Katta Maram, Kooli, etc.
Likewise some names and words have gotten Tamilised.
Tharbooz@Tharboosh became TharbuusaNi. It would sound as
if it is a another kind of PuusaNikkaay(பூசணிக்காய்).
By some coincidence, some such words have become
so much resembling a Tamil word. This could mislead us into
making us think that the word is an original Tamil word.
