Since you might be based in the UK now (going by your dot uk email address),
I would very very strongly recommend you rent the video, "Elizabeth I: The
Virgin Queen", the movie that was released about 2-3 years ago.
It puts things into perspective so much. England was in its lowest state,
about one of the weakest states in Europe, when she came to power around
1500. And the changes this 23 year old illegitimate child princess, who was
nearly burnt as a witch brought about.
Nothing like being exposed to some of those images and gestures, somewhat
parallel to the movie "Gandhi" in effect.
And to think that she set the grounds, for England, a mere 104 years later,
to begin on a journey in Chennai that has us now to write to each other in
English!
Real illuminating to see how things can be changed real fast if the right
strategic levers are pressed. And now with viral propagation a la Hotmail
and television (how long did it take Coca Cola to convince folks that coke
is better than water?), we can do it even faster with shared ethos
"pent-up-let's-do-it" groups like Tamils. And parallel groups.
