Dear Agathiyarians,

I am intending to write some article which would benefit the beginners in
this IT world.

This is basically to share information even though this does not meet the
direct objective of this club. I would stand to believe it would have an
indirect impact to the members of this club especially to the beginners in
the IT World.

I would like to hear from the members if this type of articles is useful
for the members here? I would stop with this article if this article does
not meet it purpose.

Article 1 ( Google - The Search Engine )

When we login to internet and wanna look for a precious information for
our assignment, the first thing comes into our mind is a serach engine.
Nowadays, Search Engines became a synonym with internet . Without search
engines, the developments, and the 'hunting' process via the internet ought
to be retarded. The transfer of information between people becomes slow.

Currently, we have 2,549 search engines out of 189 countries from 6
regions ( as of 1st October, 2002 ) either created for personal web
searching purpose (intranet) or for public web searching purposes
(internet). As we go public, the amount of load need to be handled
increases dramatically and need not to mention its complexity to process
the information.

Every search engine need to 'update' itself for new website's created
every moment the site is created and need to 'vomit' the information out
when needed. We have leading search engines like Yahoo, Excite, Altavista,
Google, HotBot, Lycos, Look Smart, DMoz, Web Crawler and etc.

Out of the given list, Google tend to outstand the rest and its a no more
surprise as it is our favourite search engine.

Hmmm..... Have we wondered, what makes Google to be the best and take the
lead in the market?

Why Google the Best ?
----------------------
It is simply because Google can retrieve needed information much much
faster with more relavant answers than other search engines.

How This is Done ?
---------------------

The Google search engine uses an advanced proprietary indexing technique
known as PageRank(TM). PageRank(TM) calculates the popularity of a page
or site by counting how many other page linked to it, along with other
factors.

Google uses the PageRank(TM) together with a highly-technological
infrastructure to support its base which in other words makes Google an
unique combination. The information retrieval speed we experience can be
attributed in part to the efficiency of Google's search algorithm and
partly to the thousands of computers networked together to create a
superfast search engine.

PageRank (TM)
---------------
PageRank(TM) a system for ranking web pages developed by the founders of
Google itself, Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University (I have
forgotten the year Google was setup).

Let's go a little deeper into its technology.

PageRank(TM) as said by Google Corporation, relies on the uniquely
democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an
indicator of an individual page's value. In other words, Google interprets
a link from page A to page B as a vote, labeled as 'by page A, for page B'
listed in a particular table.

But, Google looks at other factors too than just popularity votes, or
links that a page receives. It also analyzes the page that casts the vote.
Votes cast by a first page refered to a new page by a link are themselves
"important" weigh more heavily and help to make new page "important."

In essence , high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google
remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean
nothing to us if they don't match our query. So, Google combines PageRank
with another sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are
both 'important' (by using PageRank) and relevant to your search (by using
sophisticated text-matching technique).

Is tat all ??
-----------

Friends, Google goes far beyond the number of times a phrase appears on a
page and examines all aspects of the page's content and also the contents
of the pages linked to it to determine if it's a good match for the query
been made. But basically, the above said factors are the back bone of
Google's search algorithm.
