Dear Rangarajan: Thanks very much for such a vivid portrayal of the
past days. if I may add a bit of my own to it:
ThOdhAthri Iyengar was an extraordinary man. He was a giant in
mathematics which he taught and was extremely knowledgeable in
literature as well. The mention of his name brings the word "surds" to my
mind as he taught that in our B.Sc. algebra class with a lot of fervour!
T.I always wore a spotless white dhoti in pancakaccam in and outside the
college. Unlike you, my sitting near him was in upanyAsAs (particularly on =
thiruppAvai and bhAgavatham). Sri. Narasimhachariar who was then one of the=
thamiz pundits, used to do the upanyAsams on the side in perumAL temples.
There was also Sr. Sankara Iyer who taught thamiz (all the teachers except =
the younger English teachers) came dressed in panchakaccam! I used to
participate in the extracurricular competitions on thiruppAvai,
thiruvempAvai,Bhagavath Geethai and music and have received prizes for them=
and for my science subjects from TI's hands at the annual day functions.
All in all, he was a rare gem, the like of whom we don't see these days (--=
a typical oldtimer's statement!:)
I had Sundharesa Iyer for Chemistry (my major subject) who was a
great teacher but was rumoured to have activities such as the one you
described (and more!). For English, no one seemed to ever
equal 'Shakespeare' V.Subramanian who used the class as his stage. I also
had two young Profs for English, Narayanan and G.S. Balakrishnan. The
latter was always sought after for his enormous sense of humour in the
class. he subsequently became a thamizh story writer "GSB' and often wrote =
using his wife's name, Vijaya ( I have one of his books that he gave me
when I met him in the 90s!). I'll stop here since one can keep on
reminiscing such nice memories for ever!!
